Equipment
This page describes equipment that will help you do asanas correctly.
One of yoga's advantages is that it requires little equipment and can be done almost anywhere at almost no cost. However, there are some pieces of equipment that help. Iyengar yoga is known for its extensive use of props (equipment).
- A yoga mat is a sheet of thick plastic like carpet underlay. It is sticky and prevents your feet from slipping. We strongly recommend you use a yoga mat when you practice.
- Straps are nylon bands 2cm wide and a meter long. They are used to hold your legs or hips in position during asanas. A towel will work almost as well.
- Foam blocks are used to support and position your body. They are dense rather than spongy.
- Bolsters are long, thick, dense pillows used to support your body during restorative asanas which are commonly held for five to 10 minutes.
Studios use a wide array of additional equipment. We'll add those later.
