FAQ

This page includes answers to common questions about yoga.

Is yoga a religion?

No. The goal of yoga is spiritual enlightenment but asanas, pranayama and meditation can be practiced by people of any faith since they have no spiritual content.

Do I have to be really flexible?

No. Anyone can practice yoga. We were all stiff in the beginning. With patience and daily practice anyone can benefit greatly from asanas. Yoga is as much mental (mindfulness, body awareness) as it is physical.

Am I too old?

No. The oldest yoga teacher is 91 years old. Anyone who can walk can practice yoga. With patience and daily practice anyone can benefit from asanas. Yoga is as much mental (mindfulness, body awareness) as it is physical.

Do I have to give up meat/tobacco/alcohol/coffee?

No. Everyone decides for themselves at what level they practice Yama/Niyama. Not smoking, eating only limited amounts of lean red meat and drinking in moderation will improve your health significantly. Drinking coffee in moderation will make you calmer but none of this prevents you for practicing yoga.
